Due: Tuesday, Aug. 31st

Prompt

You are a journalist from the Los Angeles Times assigned to write an opinion piece on the homeless population in California.  You have been asked to provide a strong context for the political climate and reality of homelessness currently and then interview one person as a source for your piece.  You are going to use "Stories from the Streets," specifically John's story, as your main source/interview.
Refer to the character profile, articles, and discussion from class to help you write your piece.

Ideas/topics for consideration:

  • stereotypes and assumptions regarding the homeless
  • past and current legislation regarding the homeless
  • you own opinions and experiences with homelessness

Consider these aspects while writing your piece:
  1. Who is your audience? Who are you trying to reach?
  2. What is the purpose of your piece? Consider the point/argument/story you choose to portray in your article and why you decided to do go that route.
  3. What is the context for your piece?  Time frame, policies in place, conversation surrounding the topic over the last year, 3 years, 5 years, etc.
  4. Keep in mind the genre in which you are writing- newspaper article as a journalist

  1. Homeless is a major problem that plagues the city of Los Angeles . To further gain an insight into the predicament and reality of the homeless, I interviwed a homeless man named Mark . Mark is a forty years old man, who has been homeless for 3 years. I met Mark at a Starbucks to conduct the interview. Mark share his experience of him being on the street , and how he love fighting for his country. been a veteran for many years and end up being in a street.
. I asked Mark a little about his life story. He said grew up Los Angeles and I asked , what are the problems he face daily? mark said, “finding somewhere to bathe is a major issue. and also where to have all his daily activities. I ask him why, his on street, which was as result he not able to pay all his bills on time, he was ejected from his home. Mark he is very likable, smile, religion in faith, very intelligent he is also a write ,he believe one day he will still be back in the track. He also into alcoholism and different type of things he was not used before according to him.
I have a pass experience with a homeless man, that approach me for some money, which I gave some money, because of what he told he has no eating for the pass two day. But after three day I still meet the same person telling me the same story I begin to doubt him. However, in the case of mark he is very sincere person .
