As a social problem in our world today I chose to discuss health, but not overall health- in depth of AIDS. It caught my attention when I was scrolling down a website and seen the death rates for HIV/AIDS continuously rise, it made me realize that we are lucky but we aren’t fully aware. Lucky in the sense that we have a pill to help with AIDS but unaware of the problem or aware but choose not to acknowledge it. For example, I asked my younger brother if he was aware of HIV/AIDS considering he gets around- but he answered me saying, “It can’t happen to me.” Not only was I shocked but I was failing to see that my brother was unaware and so were his friends. Mainly I chose the topic due to the effort of trying to raise awareness and spark something within younger people that don’t get the real story or truly know the effect of dealing with HIV/AIDS. What I liked about the topic, was how many groups and organizations there are to help those battling HIV/AIDS but also offer support in any way they could. A few days back I read an article of how a man (CEO Martin Shkreli) bought the rights to the drug (Daraprim) that helps treat people dealing with AIDS. Instead of being a good thing, Martin Shkreli raised the price from $13.50 per pill to $750- almost a 5000% increase, making it harder for those who need the pill to get the pill. In other matters, according to a website there are 35 million people living with aids today and 3.2 of them are children under 15 years of age. A famous group that tried to raise awareness of AIDS was TLC, in a song called Waterfalls- they used the lyrics in a way to tell a story of a man chasing a life that he ended up paying the price. HIV/AIDS is serious and that is also a reason I was interested in the topic and looked forward to sharing it.
