Police Brutality
Police brutality on the African American community, throughout the United States, is on the rise. It seems as if a week does not go by without the news reporting that another person of color, has died at the hands of a white police officer, who is suppose to protect and serve. I read the article “8 Horrible Truths About Police Brutality and Racism in America Laid Bare by Ferguson.” There was one statement in particular, from the article, that stood out to me. Darren Wilson, the white police officer who shot and killed, Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, went on national television and said he would do the same thing again, after being exonerated by a local grand jury. Ferguson, Missouri is where the killing occurred. This article reported that, “police shoot and kill blacks almost twice as frequently as any other racial group.” “Mother.Jones.org reported, after examining piles of federal crime data.” “Black people were about four times as likely to die in custody or while being arrested than whites.”
I chose this topic because I am a single black woman, raising a black male and I realize that racism is real, and that this could very well become my story for me and my son. In this article, President Obama urged Americans to, “mobilize,” “organize,” “find the “best practices,” and “vote”, in an effort towards change.
